The difference between Balayage & Ombre

What is the difference?
Is it the same thing? I get asked this a lot.
Well, kind of:
Balayage is a French word meaning 'sweeping'.
It's a technique that takes practice so is always best left to the professionals.
Pre-lighteners are used in smooth freehand strokes throughout the hair, creating a naturally sunkissed effect. It's a bit of an art to be honest.
This can be accentuated to give high contrast in shades or can be used to give a subtle soft lift.
The image below shows a simple Balayage.
This creates dimension with lighter tones throughout the hair and natural tones remaining throughout.
So, the Ombre: Here is an example.
It's a style where we go from from a darker shade to a lighter shade throughout the length of the hair.
The ends are brighter and there is no natural hair remaining at the tips.
The Balayage technique is used in both processes.
