Ponytails- We all love them

A ponytail is a great and relatively easy style to pull off. It's also a quick go-to option for anyone wanting a day off from heated stylers and product use.

Now, don't forget, there is still a bit of an art to this. Simply chucking yur hair up with a hairband and no thought probably wont look that great.

I remember when I was in training being told that if I could master the perfect ponytail, I'd make a good stylist. I hadnt realised at the time- how compliacted a ponytail couold get. The ponytail is often the basis of a good hair up option which is something I now specialise in. I'm not going to complicate anything here- Let's keep it simple for an easy hair day.

So, what can I tell you that you might not alread know?

A good ponytail is something to be admired and certainly practiced. Yes-Practised. Even the messy ones need a little bit of tact. I will keep this simple.

Here are a few handy tips from me, dependant on your hair type.

If you have fine, straight or silky hair: You'll find that your hair tends to slip on itself. This means that you need to add a little texture/grip first. A small spritz of sea salt spray works perfectly for this as you prepare your hair before tying it up. Preparation is vital. Like anything- A good foundation is key to producing a worthy product. Sea salt sprays are readily available online and in supermarkets too. Simply spritz over the lower parts of your hair before you begin.

If you have thick, curly or frizzy hair: Preparation couldn't be more important. You will want to ensure any frizz is removed before you start. This can be done with a quick smoothing out with your hairdryer or with the use of a moisturising product. Leave-in conditioner sprays are great for this and they give the hair a little treat at the same time. If you really don't want to blowdry your hair first- You will need a good finishing product once your hair in in place,to tame unruley hairs and keep them in place. A cream lotion is usually best for this.

To add volume and movement to all hair types: Once your hair is prapared correctly-separate the top half section of your hair (ear to ear) Add the

first hairband when you have pulled this section of hair to your crown. Grab the remaining bottom half of your hair and take each side up and over the first hairband and add another band. This will give you great volume. To add more movement, Simply curl the end of your ponytail. This can be done with your fingers by twisting the hair and holding for a moment. You will need either a sculpting product (if your hair is straight) or a curl accelerator if you have wavey or curly hair to make this hold. A quick mist of hairspray aimed up into the centre of the ponytail will also add extra volume immediately. It is easier to spray if you tilt your head.

If you want extra length: You can create a long

er looking ponytail with the double ponytail. You make one ponytail using the bottom half of your hair, and one using the top half. This creates the illusion of a more lengthy ponytail. Make sure you keep those bands semi close toget

her or you could look a little dinosaur like. Probably not the look you're after.

If you want extra height: Simply section your placed ponytail horizontally in two with your fingers and place a butterfly or claw clip here (in the middle of your hair) Drop the top section you're holding down over the clip and you're done. It's a bit like hidden scaffolding but will only work with a thick head of hair.

Another tip: By adding twists and or plaits to the hair before tying it up, you can achieve some really unique looks. Don't be afraid to mix it up a little. The possibilities are endless.

If you want to try something new:

The faux ponytail is here. You may have noticed that there's a lot of long ponytails around, they look fantastic, perfectly flicked at the tip or super smooth and glam. Some are so long they almost hit the ground.

Some of them look so perfect that you wonder if they are real. Chances are, they aren't.

Faking it, is now easier than ever.

Welcome the faux ponytail. They range im price from around £25 right up into the hundreds.

All you need to do is clip them into place over your own ponytail. Great if you're trying to grow your short hair and want something special. You can chose from wrap arounds that hide the join between your hair and the faux hair or you try others that are more focused on adding extra volume to your crown.

Do shop around and try them out for size first.

Join the ponytail trend but remember, it is true what they say about hair follicle damage to the front hairline. Please don't pull your pony 'too tight'. You don't need to create a face lift at the same time and damage can be permanant.
